Wasps are a generally misunderstood species, we like to think of them as Bee`s with less public relations training.
They are beneficial for insect control in the wild and our gardens and are usually no more than a distraction to people or pets.
However they can be become a serious nuisance if nesting in your garden, roof or shed.
Wasp stings can be painful and sometimes cause a more serious allergic reaction, in extreme cases this can lead to anaphalaxis which can be life threatening.
Not all nests require treatment and we will advise accordingly if this is the case.
Wasp life cycle
For most of the year the wasp is busy fetching food and working for the well being of the nest.
As autumn approaches the newly hatched queens will flee the nest to begin a new life cycle of their own.
This leaves the majority of the workers redundant and they can no longer feed within the nest itself.
This is the time they are most visible and likely to bother us. They search for sugary drinks or food sources to sustain them, they can become desperate and aggressive at this time.
The Nest
Wasps strip and chew wood, usually from fences or sheds to build their nest.
The wood is mixed with saliva and becomes a paste like matter almost papier mache which is used to construct the nest.
The nest is usually grey or brown but can sometimes have multiple colours depending if the wasps have been stripping fences that have been treated with coloured stain.
How to spot if you have a wasp nest
Noting small areas of shaved wood from your fence in early spring will denote a queen wasp is using this wood to make a nest
Seeing wasps continually using a very specific flight path to a given area
Seeing the nest itself (usually the nest is out of sight in a soffit box or into a wall vent or cavity, unless built onto a tree branch or bush or even an exposed rafter inside a garden shed
Should I have my wasp nest treated?
If the wasp nest is causing an issue or distress, it is best to have it treated quickly.
As the nest grows throughout the summer, so do the number of adults within.
Come autumn a large nest can turn into a serious problem.
At this time wasps can become aggressive and being stung will become increasingly likely.
